Class Descriptions:
Beginner classes run on a 10-week Term schedule. Each Term will explore a different style within flamenco. Posture, arm and hand movements, and footwork techniques will be taught in a fun and supportive learning environment.
Choreography classes (Elementary through Advanced levels)
During the 40-week dance-year an original choreography will be taught and practiced in preparation for the Flamenco Victoria Student Showcase, in which students are encouraged to participate, (an additional performance fee applies).
Technique classes cover a variety of flamenco skills and rhythms suitable for the level advertised. These classes do not perform in the Student Showcase and are great for dancers who are not able to commit to the full dance-year.
Parent and Kid classes are open to a parent dancing with one or more children. Children are welcome to attend without a parent by special arrangement, and at the appropriate level.
Open Level classes require a minimum of 1-year flamenco experience. These mixed-level classes focus on particular styles or flamenco techniques. Students will be challenged to develop skills and build technique through group and individual instruction within the class.
- Tangos class will range from basic structure to more advanced techniques for this specific 4-beat dance style. Class content will be tailored to the level of the attending students.
- Bulerías class will dive deep into this unique style of flamenco and its multi-layered rhythms.
- Solo Skills specifically focuses on the skills needed for individual performance with live accompaniment. There is a high-level of personal practice needed to get the most out of this valuable learning opportunity. Recommended for Intermediate and Advanced level dancers.
- Fiesta Skills class is a sampling of the most common “fiesta dances” (Tangos, Fandangos, Bulerías, and Sevillanas). Great for Elementary level dancers who are new to these specific styles, or upper-level dancers wanting a refresher of the basics.
- Cante (singing) is a great class for singers, and those interested in gaining a better understanding the essential elements of flamenco. No singing or Spanish language experience needed.
- Mantón class will focus on technique and choreography using a large dance shawl (mantón). Students are expected to supply their own mantón.
- Bata de cola class will focus on technique and choreography using a skirt with a tail (bata de cola). Students are expected to supply their own bata de cola.
- Castanets class will focus on technique and choreography using castanets as a percussive supplement to flamenco dancing. Students are expected to supply their own castanets, although some will be available to use during class until students have a chance to buy their own.
- Spanish for Dancers is a mixed level dance technique and vocabulary class conducted in Spanish. This is a great class for students interested in traveling to Spain and learning the basic terminology and phrases needed to get the most out of learning Flamenco in a non-English speaking environment
